Dokomali: A Hidden Waterfall in the Mountains

Dokomali is a spectacular waterfall tucked into the mountains of Ainaro, the centrepiece of a community-based day tour that pairs a guided hike with a traditional welcome, a home-cooked highland lunch, and sweeping views over Timor-Leste's interior. Developed with USAID's Tourism For All project and now offered by several local operators, it is one of the country's most rewarding off-the-beaten-track experiences.

The journey climbs from Dili into the cool highlands around Ainaro, winding past the Fleixa viewpoint and the slopes of Mount Kablaki before reaching the village of Lebolau. The mountain scenery alone, with terraced gardens, forested ridges, and valleys that fall away into cloud, makes the drive a highlight in its own right.

At Lebolau, visitors are met with a lively welcome ceremony: cultural elders in traditional dress, music, and dance, followed by a community-prepared lunch of locally grown food. A guided walk then leads to the Dokomali waterfall, where the water tumbles through dense forest into a cool pool, a reward well earned after the climb. Along the way, guides share the story of Timor-Leste's struggle for independence at a statue of national hero Nicolau Lobato.

The tour was created under the USAID Tourism For All project and is now run by a group of Timorese operators for both domestic and international visitors. During its pilot, 90% of participants rated the experience "good" or "excellent," and every one of them said they would recommend it.
