Cristo Rei

Cristo Rei

Dili's guardian above the bay, reached by 500 steps

A towering 27-metre statue of Christ standing on a globe at the tip of Cape Fatucama, arms outstretched over the Bay of Dili. The climb to the base is one of the capital's most rewarding short walks, and the quiet beaches on either side make it a favourite spot for sunrise.

Cristo Rei de Díli is the capital's most recognisable landmark, unveiled in 1996. Over 500 steps wind up the headland past the 14 Stations of the Cross, lined with frangipani trees and sweeping views back over the city and out towards Atauro Island. Most visitors come at dawn to beat the heat and watch the sun rise over the water. At the base, Cristo Rei Beach to the east and the quieter "Back Beach" (Dolok Oan) to the west are ideal for a swim after the climb.
