Baucau

Colonial grandeur on an eastern plateau

The second-largest city sits on a plateau overlooking the sea, with a charmingly raffish old town of Portuguese architecture, huge banyan trees, and the pink-hued Pousada de Baucau surrounding an attractive old market square.

The beautiful spring-fed Piscina de Baucau is one of the country's most delightful surprises: a public swimming pool fed by a clear natural spring, set in gardens with tennis courts. Beyond the city, Mt Matebian (2,315m), the sacred "Mountain of Spirits", offers strenuous summit hikes with views across all of eastern Timor-Leste. Nearby Venilale has colonial architecture, natural hot springs at Vaicana, and WWII-era Japanese tunnels.
