Whale & Dolphin Watching

Timor-Leste's deep offshore waters are a migration highway for over 20 cetacean species. Blue whales, sperm whales, and pilot whales pass through the Wetar Strait and Ombai Strait between October and December. Year-round, spinner dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and melon-headed whales are regularly spotted from the north coast. Ataúro Island is one of the best land-based whale-watching spots in Southeast Asia.

Timor-Leste is one of the few places on Earth where you can witness and even swim alongside whales. The deep ocean trench lies just a few kilometres from shore, meaning you can often spot whales breaching or spouting from the coastline or during short boat trips. The calm, clear waters provide ideal conditions for observing these gentle giants. For those seeking a truly unforgettable encounter, guided swimming experiences allow you to enter the water and share the ocean with these magnificent animals in a respectful and sustainable way. Timor-Leste's commitment to eco-friendly tourism ensures that whale watching and swimming activities are conducted responsibly, protecting both the animals and their environment.
