Timor-Leste sits within the Coral Triangle, the global epicentre of marine biodiversity. In 2016, Conservation International scientists recorded an average of 253 reef fish species per dive site around Ataúro Island. That was the highest concentration ever documented on Earth, surpassing Raja Ampat's previous record of 216. A total of 642 species were catalogued across the survey. Over 400 coral species thrive in waters where visibility regularly exceeds 30 metres.
