The guided sunrise trek begins in darkness from Hato Builico, a village at approximately 2,000m elevation surrounded by characteristic thatched circular, conical-roofed houses. The surrounding Ainaro highlands are an active coffee-growing region with villages connected by walking tracks through steep terrain. Pack horses and ponies remain the primary means of transportation in many areas.
