DaTerra: A Farm That Teaches

DaTerra is an agroecological and educational farm near Baucau: part working farm, part learning centre, part guesthouse. Founded as a social enterprise, it runs a nursery of more than 200 species and one of the country's largest seed banks, while welcoming visitors to stay in handmade bungalows and join farm life, hikes, and the wonders of eastern Timor-Leste.

Set about two hours east of Dili, DaTerra was founded by Fernando Madeira as a place where sustainable agriculture and ethical tourism reinforce each other. Guests sleep in traditional-style bungalows built from mud, rice straw, and sand, and eat what the farm and the neighbouring community produce, a genuinely low-budget, low-impact way to experience the highlands.

The farm is a serious agricultural project. It keeps a nursery of more than 200 plant and tree species, one of Timor-Leste's largest seed banks, and demonstrates permaculture techniques from composting to fish farming and water management. Each year it distributes around 1,500 fruit trees to surrounding communities and offers free school tours that have hosted hundreds of students, and even a visit from former President José Ramos-Horta.

For travellers, DaTerra is also a base for adventure. From here you can hike Mount Matebian or the Mundo Perdido range, visit hot springs and waterfalls, or take a boat trip to look for dolphins and whales in the deep waters off the north coast. More than 3,500 people have passed through its gates, drawn by a model that puts community, learning, and the land first.
