Whale-Watching Season Kicks Off in Timor-Leste

October 8, 2025

Back to News

From October through December, Timor-Leste provides rare access to pygmy blue whales, sperm whales, and other marine giants as they migrate through the Ombai-Wetar Strait — one of Earth's few deep-water migratory superhighways.

A colossal migration is underway in the waters of Timor-Leste as the annual whale watching season begins. From October through December, visitors may encounter pygmy blue whales, sperm whales, melon-headed whales, and short-finned pilot whales.

Positioned in the Coral Triangle, Timor-Leste hosts over one-third of all known cetacean species. Half-day and full-day tours can be booked from Dili and Atauro Island.
