# Tourism Timor-Leste > Official tourism portal of Timor-Leste (East Timor), operated by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment. Timor-Leste is Southeast Asia's youngest nation, located on the eastern half of the island of Timor. It restored independence on May 20, 2002, becoming the first new sovereign state of the 21st century. In October 2025, Timor-Leste became the newest member of ASEAN. ## Why Visit Timor-Leste is one of the least-visited countries in the world — fewer than 10 tourists per day on average. There are no tourist traps, no touts, and no crowds. The country sits within the Coral Triangle, the global epicentre of marine biodiversity, and its waters hold world records for reef fish diversity. The people are consistently described by travelers as among the friendliest on Earth. It is the only Portuguese-speaking country in Asia and one of the most Catholic nations in the world (97%). The government's National Tourism Policy, "Growing Tourism to 2030," targets 200,000 annual visitors, USD $150 million in revenue, and 15,000 direct jobs by 2030. The strategy explicitly pursues high-value, low-impact tourism — not trying to be Bali, but competing on authenticity and exclusivity. ## Key Destinations - **Atauro Island** — World-class diving with the highest recorded reef fish biodiversity on Earth. Conservation International (2016) documented an average of 253 reef fish species per dive site, surpassing the previous world record of 216 held by Raja Ampat. A total of 642 species were catalogued. - **Dili** — The capital city. Cristo Rei statue (27m), Resistance Museum, Tais Market, waterfront dining, and gateway to all destinations. - **Mount Ramelau** — Highest peak at 2,963m. Popular sunrise trek through cloud forests and sacred sites. The highest point between Timor and the stars. - **Jaco Island** — Sacred uninhabited island at the country's eastern tip with pristine white sand beaches. Considered the most beautiful beach in Timor-Leste. - **Nino Konis Santana National Park** — First and largest national park, protecting ecosystems from coral reefs to montane cloud forests. - **Baucau** — Second-largest city with Portuguese colonial old town, natural swimming pools, and dramatic coastal cliffs. - **Maubisse** — Highland town in coffee country with cool climate, mountain views, and the historic Pousada de Maubisse. - **Balibo** — Historic border town. Site where five Australian journalists were killed during the 1975 Indonesian invasion. Balibo Fort Hotel is now a heritage accommodation. - **Oecusse** — Timor-Leste's exclave, separated from the rest of the country by Indonesian West Timor. Site of the original Portuguese landing in 1515. - **Com & Tutuala** — Eastern villages near Jaco Island, with ancient cave paintings at Ile Kere Kere dating back thousands of years. ## Experiences ### Diving & Snorkelling The Coral Triangle — the global epicentre of marine biodiversity.
